Book a GoBoat that seats eight people and enjoy Canberra by water. Chart your own pace and course; we provide you with a map of the Lake and good advice. The boat may be operated by anyone over the age of 18, and no licence or prior experience is required. You will be instructed on how to operate the boat before departure. Think about some drinks or snacks too!

Questions about booking, cancellation, attendance and similar

Can you get a boat without having booked in advance?

We recommend you book in advance, but if you feel like popping down to GoBoat in person you may be able to rent a boat if we have one available.

Do I have to pay a security deposit?

 Yes. Our boats are worth as much as a medium sized new car, so we may take a security deposit just like car rental companies. The current deposit is $200, and is refunded in full when the boat is returned undamaged at the end of your rental.

How to cancel my boat(s)?

Cancellations made within 24 hours of the commencement of your rental cannot be refunded.  Cancellations between 24 and 48 hours before your booking will mean you receive a credit for the same value to use at another time.  Bookings cancelled before 48 hours get a full refund.  You must request your cancellation by emailing bookings@goboatcanberra.com.au and for more details please visit the Terms page.

How long before my sail time do I have to be there?

You must arrive 15 minutes before departure. This is to ensure that there is time for you to get instructions on safety and how the boat is controlled. If you are late, you will spend less time on the water, as your boat will still be due back by the agreed time when you made your booking.

How do you book a boat?

You can either book a boat here on our website or by walking up to our boathouse at Kingston. It requires a credit/debit card to book a boat.

Can I get a discount if you rent multiple boats?

The longer you rent for, the lower the price is per hour. There is no discount for booking multiple boats.

How many people can be in a boat?

Are life jackets included in the price?

Yes! Lifejackets and all safety gear is included in the price. Life jackets for adults located in the storage compartment on the boat. We also have life jackets for children and babies. Please ask in advance if your require life jackets for children, as they are not stored on the boat.

Do you have life jackets for children and babies?

Absolutely. We have lifejackets down to XS bambino size. You must request a child life jacket at the counter, and it is a legal requirement that anybody under 12 years old wear a life jacket at all times while on the boat.

Can I go fishing from the boat?

 In the interests of the people who will rent the boat after you, we do not allow fishing from the GoBoat. We will charge a $100 cleaning fee for the boat if it is used for fishing.

Yes, we have a great selection of drinks you can order at the counter. Soon you’ll also be able to order them online in advance when you book.

Of course you can! There is a large table in the middle of the boat that makes it easy to eat, and we all know the best social activities involve food!

 Part of the fun of GoBoat is being your own captain!  But if you have a special request, we may be able to accommodate it at our discretion.  Please contact us directly to ask.

Are there different sizes of boats?

No. We have only one type of boat, and you’ll love it!  With room for 8 people, a communal picnic table and a state of the art electric motor, it’s all the boat you ever wanted for Lake Burley Griffin.

Can you bring your dog on the boat?

Yes, GoBoat is very doggo-friendly. However, we have very limited life vests for dogs, so it would be wise to bring your own.

Can you drop off the boat somewhere else?

No. And you shouldn’t leave the boat unattended at any time, because if it’s stolen or damaged, you’ll be liable. The boat must always be brought back to our rental station.

How does the boat work?

The boats are powered by an electric motor connected to a battery bank. The boats sail around 4 knots (6-7 km/h).

Where can you sail?

You can sail all over the lake, including East Basin and West Basin, but not past the Black Mountain Peninsula and not up the Jerrabomberra Creek or the Molonglo River. You’ll be provided with a map when you arrive!

Does it require sailing experience or boat licence to rent your boats?

No, and that’s what we’re all about! The boats are easy to control. The only requirement is that the person sailing the boat is 18 years old and remains sober during the experience.

Can you drink alcoholic beverages onboard?

The person designated as the skipper – who steers the boat – must remain sober during the sailing. The rest of the guests may consume alcohol, but any antisocial behaviour or intoxication can lead to the boat being remotely disabled and your booking cut short.  No refunds will be available if this happens.
